Today will be a COMPILATION day we have so much music on comps, they are too much fun.…the tunes on these discs reveal a moment in time & of place….some of these bands never made it past these compilations…. so off we go-go!
BENTLEY RHYTHM ACE is first from the The Acid House compilation CD. These Kats hail from Birmingham, UK…formed in ‘97, had a bit of success, then vanished, then unvanished…this duo still makes the beat happen. Here’s “This is CARBOOTECHNOODISCOTECHNOBOOTO”. Yell this fast Thrice!
Next up THE GYRES off the same Acid House Comp. This Scottish band is all jangleypop….here’s “Break” only one full album released before they broke.
We go to ASIA next with Friends, Lovers, & Family off the Asia Lounge comp CD…this group is not a group but a lone cut & paste magician….LAURENCE ELLIOTT-POTTER, here with “20 Camel” .
Cargo Records was a powerhouse for a moment…mid’90s…this Montreal based record label was a juggernaut….not only making records, producing albums, also distributing small competing labels, biggly biz… eh? When they collapsed many thought much of the Canadian music market would too. They released labels like Epitaph, SST, Sub Pop, Caroline, Discord to name a few. Then would offer Comp Cds for cheap….bands like Nirvana, Rancid, Shadowy Men from a Shadowy Planet, Offspring, Mudhoney….mostly Alternative or Punk….Here’s LOUDSPEAKER from the AIM-041 Cargo Sampler CD…playing “Stump Neck”. AIM stands for Adventures In Music…
We’ve got a BREAKTHRU next from the Alphabeat Compilation CD….with their mid’60s tune “Here Comes The End”. From the West Midlands UK, BREAKTHRU played high energy live shows of the “Psychedelic Soul” genre….

Astralwerks New Music 05 is the CD…”Wonderful Night” is the tune…FATBOY SLIM is the guy (real name Norm Cook, we like Fatboy better)….this one’s a toe tapping, shimmy shaker. Mr. Slim’s “Weapon of Choice” video with the unbreakable CHRISTOPHER WALKEN is spectacular….so here’s a twofer…vid&song.
We’re in “PRECIOUS YEARS” from the compilation of the same name….GLENN REEVES is singin’. Mr. REEVES has a tale to tell… Shamrock, TX born, Korean War vet, Local Radio DJ, then a Western swing band…met “The Queen of Nashville” MAE BOREN AXTON, she’s been asked to write ELVIS P. a tune….she writes “Heartbreak Hotel” but needs someone to record it first to see how it sounds….Attention Mr. REEVES, please stand to the mic…they make a version of the song as a test in the way Mr. PRESLEY would sing it. ….amazing right?
We’ve got Pre-BREAD next with Tulsa’s DAVID GATES (Baby I’m A Want You? anyone?)….from the wonderful Comp. My World of Make Believe….here’s “Through Spray Coloured(UK sp) Glasses”. a DEMO version. Mr. GATES could not be anything but a musician, songwriter, singer….both parents were Musos…. Dad, Band Leader…Mom, Piano teacher…His group ‘70s soft rock group BREAD became huge, making gushy love tunes…This reporter’s “Best of Bread” 8-track was date night seductive or so we thought (hoped)…it was the ‘70s. They did do “Guitar Man”…whaaaaa whaaaaaa…. Retired now in ranch land, Washington State, still married to High School Sweetie Jo Rita….wonder if he found her Diary?
Soultime with LENIS GUESS from the Aliens, Psychos, & Wild Things Compilation. Here’s “Working for My Baby”….Mr. GUESS was prolific in ‘60s hometown Norfolk, VA….produced a ton of regional soul acts, wrote songs, film star (sort of)…all on the local scene…A big part of what was known as The Norfolk Sound…gotta go figure out what that is…
THE IDIOTS! are next, maybe we shouldn’t let them, they are IDIOTS…..they have a song about a “Magic Dragon”…we want what they took…from the fine fine fine Astral Daze-Psychedelic South African Rock-1968-1972 compilation record.
We end today’s ride with FIGHT, FUCK, or DANCE with their tune “Pakistan” off the Dig the Fuzz records, Astonishing Sound Show Stories compilation….fantastic series of discs….very fun to the ears…if you want to bite heads off chickens.
