Detroit was……still is, a music hub of this country….ChiTown, Nashville, Memphis, NYC, Miami, LALA, N’awlins…all hubs that attract talent. Late 1960s…MoTown Soul is happening, as is the Rock scene…Punk, Hip-hop, & Techno will join the party later. Today we travel to ROKCITY….DEEEEtroit late 60’s into now.
Wheel starts to spin, 1966 local DJ RUSS GIBB (no relation to brothers GIBB), acquires the GRANDE BALLROOM…wants what SanFran has, Fillmore West, psychedelia music is coming, so let’s get ready! Local marauders MC5, Ann Arbor troublemakers IGGY & his STOOGES, & Cereal Town’s THE THYME become defacto house bands for UNCLE RUSS’ party… History is being made…they don't know it…

The locals open for touring biggies, LED ZEP, HENDRIX, BIG BROTHER, CREAM, JEFF BECK, the list continues…so it’s happening & getting bigger… Flint boys, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD drive down for the fun, everybody’s prom dance fav…BOB SEGER shifts into gear, with his SYSTEM, (no Silver Bullet yet)…joined by stripling GLENN FREY(later of EAGLES fame) lending vocals & acoustic guitar. ALICE COOPER ignites his mascara halloween horror show & even crazy TED NUGENT & his AMBOY DUKES join in. Mr. GIBB is eclectic, likes JOHN COLTRANE & SUN RA, they GRANDE too.

ART guys GARY GRIMSHAW & CARL LUNDGREN (☜ buttons) make snazzy psychadverts on lo-fi paper. Later, WOLFGANG opens his Vault (who?, ☜ hit button, find out), now very collectible.
The SUN RA concert postcard (above right) had a late addition, had to be manually typed on every postcard… little known Brit-Blues thing called LED ZEPPELIN.
UNCLE RUSS’ party runs outta gas 1972…high octane burns fast, he shutters the Grande, tears form. Today Grande is an old, faded husk, but might survive, it’s on the National Register of Historic Places.
$5.00 to see LED ZEPPELIN…let that sink in.
The Music propels forward, there’s no stopping it. Venues in high gear, Fox Theatre, The Hideout, Clutch Cargo’s, The Blind Pig, The Magic Bag, St. Andrews Hall, The Majestic Theatre.
