......... day 75

Hello Again Kats & Kittens, Friend & Fiend,

Let’s get right into it today………BOMP!

SUZY SHAW is a beacon, inukshuk, benchmark, guru to all things music. AND she’s a swell human….super super good person. We are gushing a bit…but it’s true.

Today we shall explore BOMP! Records, SUZY proprietoress of said BOMP!

Mid 1960s, young GREG SHAW prints mimeos of Mojo-Navigator Rock and Roll News"…this is a year before JANN WENNER gets ROLLING STONE up & running….so maybe MOJO was first? We think so. SHAW interviews GRATEFUL DEAD, BIG BROTHER, COUNTRY JOE, & many more. He’s 17…

Early 1970s, it begins…a move to LALA, GREG & SUZY SHAW publish “Who Put the BOMP!” MusicZine…taking a split from mainstream music pubs at the time, unique opinion driven scribing, by a passionate couple who love music & it’s denizens. Several writers for The SHAWS go on to bigger & better, GREIL MARCUS & LESTER BANGS to name a couple.

The Co name? 1961 hit doo-wop song by BARRY MANN, "Who Put the Bomp"…then tweaked to BOMP!.

GREG & SUZY expand to BOMP! Records, near 1974….always help, never hinder. Savior to the indie bands that wouldn’t make radar at big corps… The garage was/is full, including punk, power pop, garage rock, new wave, old school rock, pop, & music from the strange & amazing, even country. BOMP! Compilation LPs (Yes, vinyl) & CDs are stunning. Helped get IGGY going solo, THE ROMANTICS, DEVO & THE BLACK KEYS too.

They helped restart a “Garage Rock” scene in the 1980s issuing the “PEBBLES” Compilation series, quite good & fun along with a plethora of other bands.

Sadly young GREG’s ticker takes no more, passes away at 55…2004. SUZY driven to drive on…does just that. BOMP! is thriving today…SUZY wouldn’t let it be any other way.

A very Kool hardcover book(remember those?) at the store... Go to links below, spend cash, make smiles for your ears.
