Hello Again Kats & Kittens, Friend & Fiend,
Wanna laugh? Sure ya do. Check out what Leslie Knope & Friends are up….brilliant!
ONWARD!
Today we find ourselves in a bind….not really, there’s too much music out there…..it’s an endless sea…see? DAVID GILMOUR calls it The Endless River…..PINK FLOYD’s very last record…. After the death of Keyboardist RICHARD WRIGHT, Mr. GILMOUR along with drummer NICK MASON revisited the Division Bell recording sessions, they found over an hour’s worth of unreleased music, with Producer help from PHIL MANZANERA they mixed, added, took away, ended up with a record…mostly instrumental….but Kool none the less. Here’s “Louder Than Words” the only track with lead vocals….lyrics by POLLY SAMSON, Mr. G’s better half.
We stay on THE DARKSIDE with a tune from the PsPyched! CD, don’t ask us how to pronounce it….PETE “BASSMAN” BAIN is the trixster here, DARKSIDE is an amalgam of people, mostly himself acting like a band. Here’s “Guitar VooDoo”. Indeed.
To Kentucky we go…let’s visit with BLACK STONE CHERRY….From their 3rd LP, Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea….here’s “Blame It On The Boom Boom”…..straight ahead southern comfort….just the way we like it.
Next a bar band that made good….and still kickin’. The Rolling Stones from the early 1964 Out of Our Heads LP….great record here & to hear! “Good Times”….yes Mr. Jagger….yes. This album was released twice with two covers & differing tracks…
JACKIE LOMAX’s journey is interesting. Mersey Beat time, 1962 Britain, Mr. LOMAX in bands DEE & THE DYNAMITES, then THE UNDERTAKERS, is chums with GEORGE HARRISON. 1967, BEATLE manager, BRIAN EPSTEIN takes on Mr. LOMAX as his man in the suit….Roses everywhere, right? Rock road approaches, MR. LOMAX records with CBS Records, enough recorded for a full album, but only a couple singles are made, then never released….whaaaat? Hmmm. Mr. EPSTEIN dies, THE BEATLES create APPLE Records, MR. LOMAX signs on the dotted, is the inaugural virgin…1968, Mr. LOMAX starts recording a debut with THE QUIET ONE(GH), recording guests include three of the BEATLES(sans JOHN), ERIC CLAPTON, LA powerhouse THE WRECKING CREW, Keys whiz NICKY HOPKINS….Roses everywhere again, one would think…yes? One would be very wrong indeed….released 1969, the album fizzled, never made a dent. Here’s “Sour Milk Sea” written by GEORGE HARRISON.
We love DAPTONE Records…this Brooklyn label is mint….SHARON JONES, THE BUDOS BAND, JAMES HUNTER SIX, ANTIBALAS to name some….here’s another LEE FIELDS & THE EXPRESSIONS. Known as Little JB for his “Godfather of soul” like stylings….he even has a few JAMES BROWN stage moves…. Here’s “Wish You Were Here” taken off the Faithful Man album….buy this record..
We cannot help this…..we love this band…we love this album….THE TEMPTATIONS! These Kats went from street corner DOO-WOP to Psychedelia in a blink… 1968, The TEMPS liked what Sly & his FAMILY were pickin up in SanFran…HENDRIX too, soul music was on the move….now its 1969 Psychedelic Soul gets produced…here’s “Psychedelic Shack”. Psychedelic Soul is a fine fine record, put it in your library….
Long Island’s JENNY O. is up next…. off her 2013 debut Automechanic LP. This young Kitten attracts TV & Commercial music supervisors…Ms. O’s tunes featured in HBO’s TRUE BLOOD, Showtime’s SHAMELESS, a variety of commercials too….she writes visual essays……here’s “Good Love”.
Bluesy “Westcoast Lowdown” from harmonikat DOCTOR NICK & THE ROLLERCOASTERS is up. Dr. N…..named the band because of life’s peaks & valleys…these Kats play big….took in a REX HOTEL show last year in Toronto….great musicianship….from the Blues Straight Ahead album..
Finally we go to Burma…..not really more like Boston….with MISSION OF BURMA. These Kats swung hard for a short time, ‘79-’83 or so, Lead guitar/singer ROGER MILLER (not the King of the Road Roger) developed Tinnitus, had to quit being a rockstar….they tried to reform 2002, could not make it work… Here’s “Max Ernst” (Dada…yes!) from 1981’s Signals, Calls & Marches EP.
Thanks for listening, until tomorrow.
Peace & Distance.
