ONWARD!
OK….so…Platform Shoes & Glitter a must for today….we’re GLAMMIN’!
GLAM Rock & it’s babies, GlamMetal, GlamPunk, Glambilly heaved onto the scene early 70’s….yestermorn’s topic DAVID BOWIE was a spark to GLAM. Outrageous was IN!…Crazy costumes, Circus makeup, Big Hair, Platform shoes…don’t forget the Glitter (not Gary G, perv). Campy, androgynous rock-n-roll cabaret. “Let’s give ‘em a show!” And so we shall…
Glam artists not in love with 60’s Peace, Love, Drop in/drop out, Revolution will not be televised action…decadence & superficiality is their thing….rhythms swung backwards, less complex, song structure more outta the 50’s, Be-Boppa Lua Baby! Crowd pleasers please! Self absorbed party music that helped Disco mutate onto on the dance floor a few short years from now…(then).
Ignition! March 1971, UK’s Top of the Pops videocast, MARC BOLAN appears with sequins, glitter, & satins singing about “Hot Love”, GLAM rockets are GO! A year earlier he ditched the acoustic forest nymph ethos for electric guitars & sex appeal. We think it worked out.
According to friend SUZY SHAW of BOMP! (☜ hit button, buy) The music scene in the early 70s was weighed down, the heaviness of Prog-Rock (PINK FLOYD, AMON DÜÜL II) & serious Concept Albums (THE WHO, JETHRO TULL)…was taking merrymaking out of Rock-n-Roll. Folks wanted to Dance, Laugh, Have a Party… Glam did that.
Uniforms of the day….GLITTERGLITTERGLITTER! Eyeliner, Pouty lips, Clashing print stretch pants, “Zebra so goes with Leopard darling”….tighter the better on the latex, makes swell packages SWELL!…cross dress? of course…scarves, jewelry……we did mention the heels?…
Glam was by far a British Import….US version drifted toward metal…Bigger Hair, less Cross Dressing…RATT, QUIET RIOT, with ALICE COOPER, KISS, NEW YORK DOLLS, TWISTED SISTER, & of course SanFran’s THE TUBES providing costumes & theater…MÖTLEY CRÜE too, sorry had to.
OOPs, there’s the bell, GLAM class is over, time put away the fun shoes & makeup…maybe a little fun, yes? Ok maybe not. Thanks for listening, until tomorrow.
Peace & Distance.
