Hello Again Kats & Kittens, Friend & Fiend,
TIME FOR CHURCH!
MEAT CHURCH!
OK…found this site….like brisket? Texas style? Heck yes! The fine folks at Waxahachie, Oil State’s MEAT CHURCH will help. Sounds racy but its on the up & up…
The recipe pix alone will have one drooling…things like Smoked Bologna, Crawfish Boil, Tacos Barbacoa, Grilled Sausage Balls, & something called COWBOY CANDY JALAPEÑOS…buttons behind the words & below.
ONWARD!
Today, let’s get dirty in GRUNGE! Mid to Late 80s, Seattle, Coffee/Rain State…it’s rainy & muddy but something stirs the soul, guitars light up! SUB-POP records puts out serious, heavy, slow rock drudge, but its goooood & has signs of a bigger world. What shall we call this hybrid sound? Why not GRUNGE.
The West’s grunge dance starts, mixing Punk with heavy Rock, The U-MEN, THE MELVINS, GREEN RIVER get ball to roll… the “grunge” feel is also taking shape elsewhere, NYC, BOSTON, TEXAS, LA, SACRAMENTO? YES! The likes of SONIC YOUTH, PIXIES, BUTTHOLE SURFERS, DINOSUAR JR., & PAVEMENT,
The Big three hit big at a about the same time, early 90s NIRVANA, SOUNDGARDEN, & PEARL JAM.
NIRVANA’s 1991 “Nevermind” changes music landscape, making it Kool for young suburban moms & dads to pogo at home. It’s safe, it’s OK to like it. Doors & minds open, where’s our flannel.
From near & far…ALICE IN CHAINS, SCREAMING TREES, L7, HELMET, FU MANCHU, MEAT PUPPETS, HOLE, BIKINI KILL, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, TOOL, MUDHONEY, BILLY CORGAN & HIS PUMPKINS…even rock rappers FAITH NO MORE join the mosh pit.
Seattle is working class. music scene reflected that. Work clothes, truckers' hats, plaid flannel, pawnshop guitars, thriftstore…not just a style, folks were poor. When “Nevermind” reached number one in the U.S. KURT COBAIN was living in a car.
Sometimes being isolated is a good thing. Seattle’s music scene stood apart from the rest of the country, nobody outside Seattle paid any attention to the slow heavy guitars, shoe gazing lyrics, moshpits…Kookie Kids on Koffee & Rain.
Oddly enough OZZIE OSBOURNE & BLACK SABBATH helped get Seattle Sound percolating…the heavy slowness of a lot of SABBATH’s music pushed the young musos down this road. LED ZEPELLIN & NEIL YOUNG too.
There’s so much more on this, but we’re out of time. We got cookin’ to do… Check out the buttons below & enjoy the tunes……and go put on some Flannel!
End of today’s roadshow…
Thanks for listening, until tomorrow.
Peace & Distance.
