VIVIAN MAIER was an enigma……born in Europe, mysterious upbringing….lives most her life as a nanny to the “moneyed”, 1950s Northshore ChiTown…does this for forty years…all the while snap, snap, snapping pix…Vivian passes away….at auction JOHN MALOOF buys an old trunk, with about 50,000 film negative frames…there are more…setting Mr. MALOOF on a wild journey…

On the short side today, mostly music…not much verbiage.
We’re on cut&pasted island today…music put together from disparate parts…add real instrumentation, vocals (or not), old timey recorded recordings, sound effects, beats & rhythms……mix it up…boom you’ve got Kool Tunes.
Quite a few cut&paste musos start out as DJ’s taking pre-recorded tunes, mixing for parties, conventions, superbowls… They sometimes grow into MIX MASTERS…adding new instrumentation to existing songs, maybe new vocals too…creating Remixes…producing albums. Sometimes these folks blossom into full on ARTISTS writing, producing, creating from scratch, but always keeping the cut&pasted ethos.
MOBY, SKRILLEX, PAUL OAKENFOLD, STEVE AOKI, DIPLO, MAYA JANE COLES, DJ TATIANA, CARL COX to name a few…
MOBY a force to be reckoned…
1999, MOBY’s fifth album “Play” was so-so when released, the crowd wasn’t having it, said MOBY & management changed tactics & licensed most of the songs to TV, Film, & Commercial projects…it became a worldwide hit…12 million copies later we think they did right. MOBY was the first DJ to become a POP Star…the rest followed.
UK’s MEAT BEAT MANIFESTO is a super cool outfit…witnessed these SanFran based Kats a few back…wonderful video wall sunk up with the music….three lab suited computer nerds on the left….live Drummer, headphones on tight, to the right. the vids & music in total sync as the drummer pushed the music forward. We have some of their music in the mix today.
MORE CAKE! Benihana offspring, STEVE AOKI is a spectacle, this Kat brings it to places like IBIZA…always with cake……one of the richest DJs in market.
Party man CARL COX is a wonder…started performing young, disco mostly in London, shifted to House music, began utilizing a three deck stack, mixing back beats with tunes, on three turntables…..at once… how many hands does one need for this?
These folks fill stadiums! Pushing music to an edge…producing, mixing, creating…taking it to PARTY WORLD!
Punk Rock West SanFern Valley boy does good…SKRILLEX takes DubStep into the masses.
DJ TATIANA plays places like Cochella Fest, Burnin Man, Daisy Carnival…to huge audiences.
DIPLO, Mississippi born, LALA based sells & produces… teams up with SKRILLEX as electronic duo JACK Ü… umlauts anyone?
MAYA JANE COLES This Londoner with two turntables & a microphone was in demand before she was old enough to enter clubs.
