ART makes the world spin………
HAUSER & WIRTH GALLERY bases in NYC, LALA, P.O.M.E Capital, ZURICH(Watchland), HONG KONG(Wants to be Freeland), even MENORCA(MEDSEA DOT), is a very Kool thing. In LALA the gallery takes up one city block for itself…go if you can…when you can…3rd Street in DTLA…the website has a large number of fun things to read, watch, get the kids involved. For example check this video out.

MIKA ROTTENBERG: SOCIAL SURREALISM……crazy weirdness this Kitten does…fascinating! By the by, remember the buttons ☝︎under the words thing?

ONWARD!

We’re on a Jazz Note today……just felt like it…one big long hit of smokey, funky, smooth JAAZZZZZZ. With some history…soory school day, or is it?

BLUE NOTE Records is anchor, tentpole, linchpin, stalwart, sentinel…… to JAZZ in America. Started 1939, NYC by two Jazz loving neophytes…ALFRED LION & MAX MARGULIS somehow got together…Mr. LION, German, Jewish, fleeing homeland Berlin preWWII, South America trip didn’t last, then USofA….NYC dock worker….meets a liberator in MAX MARGULIS, record producer, moneyman, copyrighter, voice coach, music teacher…taught LARRY OLIVIER how to sing for the 1960 flick, The Entertainer, also SIG WEAVER, HARRIS YULIN, STACY KEACH (?)….so it says…oh Mr. MARGULIS is a pinko-commy writer, very lefty… But they like each other, hatch plans, LION runs the biz, MARGULIS pays the bills….he soon exits the CO…One FRANCIS WOLFF washes ashore from the homeland 1939, childhood bud of LION…they bond, they record, they make history. First recording was “Summertime” by Saxman SIDNEY BECHET…this first recording session was full a hooch…started late into the night after the Jazz clubs fell silent…in a boozy & smoke filled studio…BLUE NOTE records was born. The Label become known as a very friendly enviro for musos to play….…must have been the “within reach” intoxicants. Musos even got paid to rehearse.

Late ‘40s Blue Noters LION & WOLFF take notice of bebop & later hard-bop…in love again, these Kats put out an amazing array of artists & their music. THELONIUS MONK, ART BLAKEY, MILT JACKSON, BUD POWELL, MILES DAVIS, KENNY BURRELL, JOHN COLTRANE, DEXTER GORDON, FREDDIE HUBBARD, CANNONBALL ADDERLEY, HERBIE HANCOCK…and……it……goes……on……into today.

The love affair with Jazz lasted to 1965 as LION & WOLFF retire, sell the label to Liberty Records, then eaten up the corporate food-chain to United Artists Records, munched on by EMI Records, gobbled up by CAPITAL Records, then finally gorged by Universal Music Group… Only to be relaunched as BLUE NOTE Records(under Capital/Universal mothership)….out of breathe…hang on… 2012, DON WAS (WAS, NOT WAS) signed on the dotted, as label’s Grand Poobah…spinny story? Youbetcha!

A few classics from Blue Note….enjoy!

End of today’s JAZZercise!

Thanks for listening, until tomorrow.

Peace & Distance.
